HIOP/PHP Treatment

What is a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), also known as High Intensity Outpatient (HIOP) Services?

A Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), also known as High Intensity Outpatient (HIOP) is an outpatient alcohol and drug treatment option that provides high level of consistent support throughout the day while allowing you to return home in the afternoon – or to one of our sober living houses – once the treatment day is complete.

At our Outpatient Treatment Center, located in Portland, Oregon, the PHP/HIOP program involves active participation in treatment services five days a week. Our PHP/HIOP program offers an effective and measurable system of treatment that addresses the complex needs of individuals struggling with substance abuse and/or mental health issues. Our dedication and commitment to helping individuals and their families sets us apart from other local treatment facilities.

When is a PHP/HIOP Treatment Program Appropriate?

PHP treatment can be a good choice in a number of circumstances, though every person’s road to recovery is unique. By working with our admissions coordinator, who truly cares about your well-being and about you as an individual, you can understand what substance abuse treatment programs are the best for you at this particular intersection in your recovery journey.

Examples of when a Partial Hospitalization Program for addiction and mental health disorders may be recommended, include the following:

Upon discharge from an inpatient or residential treatment program where you lived at the treatment facility 24 hours a day. Stepping out of such programs and directly into daily life without any interim support can be daunting and isn’t always recommended. That’s why numerous step-down short term treatment options are available, including PHP/HIOP. With our PHP/HIOP program, you’re able to return to the controlled, safe treatment environment each day for a slower and more careful integration into your new normal.

When inpatient treatment or residential rehab is not deemed necessary. In some cases, you (and any referring provider, such as a therapist or physician) may not feel like 24-hour supervision and residential treatment services are necessary. This might be the case if severe withdrawal symptoms that affect your physical health and the need for medical detox aren’t present or if you simply don’t need the level of care offered in residential rehab.

When you’ve experienced a minor relapse. Intensive Outpatient treatment programs, including PHP, could be an option if you have relapsed, or are you struggling with an inconsistent pattern of sobriety (including a one-time use) and you want to ensure you don’t fall back into the cycle of addiction.

What to Expect from a PHP/IOP Treatment Program for Substance Use or Co-Occurring Disorders:

Our PHP/HIOP program involves spending approximately 6 hours a day at the facility, Monday through Friday. During that time, you engage with individual and group counseling to continue to identify triggers and root causes for your addiction and develop coping skills for dealing with stress, cravings, and/or any mental health issues you may be experiencing.

You will meet weekly with an experienced medical provider (either an MD or psychiatric nurse practitioner) who will evaluate your current symptoms, level of stability, and prescribe any medications that may be indicated.

You also have an opportunity listen to, talk to, and receive support from others - including licensed professionals and fellow individuals on their own roads to recovery. Studies show that individuals who develop a therapeutic community or sober support network have a significantly higher rate of treatment success.

During your time in the program, you might also participate in creative and recreational group therapy sessions designed to increase your interest in healthy coping mechanisms, build additional confidence and help you work through other issues. Our curriculum includes options such as: a weekly running group, music therapy, art therapy, yoga, and community outings to local parks and venues (e.g, OMSI, the Oregon Zoo, the Portland Art Museum, bowling, rock climbing, Multnomah Falls hike, etc.)
